In the third reiterative explanation of the root defilements, regarding 'greed, anger, conceit, and doubt are not mutually conjoined, and so forth': Jing says: 'Question: Earlier it was said that ignorance is conjoined with all defilements, up to greed and anger not being mutually conjoined, whereas greed, views, and conceit can be mutually conjoined, as when in the midst of greedy attachment one may plan and hold oneself high, and so on; how can this contradiction between earlier and later be resolved? Explanation: In their basic state, if greed, conceit, and views are fierce, they are not conjoined; if they are not fierce and arise in mutual compliance, then they can be conjoined. Each is based on one perspective, so they do not contradict each other.'
