In the Abhidharma, the abiding in the signless is combined within the sixteen minds. To answer, there are three explanations. First explanation: Conforming to the principle of the Hīnayāna, the path of seeing has fifteen minds; therefore, those resolved through faith, etc., pertain to the path of cultivation, which are now excluded. Second explanation: As in the Abhidharma, the sixteen minds are all abidings in the signless; however, the preceding fifteen minds are the uninterrupted path, in which the meaning of fully severing afflictions is predominant. Here, it temporarily does not take the sixteenth mind because it is the path of liberation; therefore, it excludes those resolved through faith, etc. Third explanation: That text makes its discussion in terms of dharmas, taking all sixteen minds as the signless, which is named the sixth. This text makes its discussion in terms of persons: if it included those resolved through faith, etc., then there would not be six kinds; therefore, it now excludes them and takes fifteen minds. Furthermore, those resolved through faith, etc., are not of a fixed stage and are present in all other fruits; therefore, it now takes the definitely signless, and thus excludes those resolved through faith, etc.
