In the treatise's explanation of the six kinds of signless abidings: as in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, where the sixteen minds of the path of seeing are all practitioners following by faith or Dharma who upon reaching the fruition stage are called 'resolved by faith', etc., the sixteenth mind being 'resolved by faith' is also within the path of seeing. Why then does it say here regarding signlessness that 'upon entering the path of seeing, those resolved by faith are excluded'? Does it exclude the sixteenth mind of the path of seeing? The signless abidings of the Abhidharma-samuccaya are all located within the sixteen minds. Answer: There are three interpretations. First, conforming to the rational approach of the Śrāvaka-piṭaka, the path of seeing has fifteen minds; hence those resolved by faith and so on belong to the path of cultivation, and are now therefore excluded. Second, as in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, all sixteen minds are signless abidings; however, the preceding fifteen minds bring the uninterrupted path to completion and are superior in the sense of abandoning afflictions. Here they are provisionally taken, without speaking of taking the sixteenth mind, because it is the path of liberation; therefore, those resolved by faith and so on are excluded. Third, that text constructs its treatise with respect to dharmas, taking all sixteen minds as signless and designating them the sixth; this text constructs its treatise with respect to persons: if it took those resolved by faith and so on, there would not be six kinds, and therefore they are now excluded, taking fifteen minds. Moreover, 'resolved by faith' and so on are not fixed stages, as they occur in all other fruitions; here, definite signlessness is taken, and therefore those resolved by faith and so on are excluded.
