'If arising' means arising with afflictions of seeing from the distracted mind of a higher stage. 'If being born' is based on being born in a higher stage; if meeting conditions for birth, generating higher afflictions of seeing is also permissible. Now saying that ordinary beings detached from the desire of the form realm have all taints severed by seeing existing in their own stage—'if in absorption, if arising, if being born, when meeting conditions they then manifest'—is based on being born in a higher stage. Because the afflictions of seeing of the lower stage do not manifest and arise, they can generate all afflictions of seeing existing in their own stage. 'If in absorption' means that from the absorption of the falling-away factor afflictions of seeing arise, and following the afflictions of seeing one returns into pure absorption; hence it says 'if in absorption.' It is not that within absorption one can generate afflictions of seeing; when an absorbed śrāvaka generates ear-consciousness, it is merely sudden, intrinsically indeterminate, and does not generate affliction. 'If arising' means that with the body in a higher stage, generally being in other states of distracted mind, when meeting conditions they can arise. 'If being born' is a general being-born; being born in the stage of absorption, at all times, if meeting conditions for birth, they then generate the afflictions of seeing of the same stage of that realm.
