Fourth, explaining the self and so forth, it says: 'Furthermore, these two activities have two causes and conditions,' etc. 'Activity' is active function. The previously mentioned sixty-two views giving rise to wrong, unwholesome actions of body, speech, and mind are called the causes and conditions of wrong conduct; the dormant seed-tendencies capable of producing painful fruits are called the causes and conditions of producing suffering. These two causes and conditions are called the two activities. These activities again have causes and conditions, and are thus called the causes and conditions of causes and conditions: the sixty-two views are the causes and conditions of wrong conduct, and the views of self and mine are again causes and conditions for the sixty-two views, hence called the causes and conditions of the causes and conditions of wrong conduct. In the initial stage, due to pride of self, one initially does not hear the true Dharma; in the later stage, due to excessive pride, one does not cultivate correct practice; these two kinds are able to produce dormant seed-tendencies, hence called the causes and conditions of the causes and conditions of the arising of suffering.
