In sexual misconduct, the bases are of seven kinds: first, women with whom one should not engage, such as the three kinds of protected women, etc., as explained earlier; second, engaging with a protected woman, but through an improper passage; third, improper place; fourth, improper time; fifth, [improper] measure—all as explained below; sixth, within the boundary; seventh, beyond the boundary. Conception has four kinds, and here the third case is taken. According to the explanations in the Abhidharmakośa: there are two explanations. One says: intending to engage with another's wife, one conceives her to be yet another person's wife; although the object deviates, because she is equally another's wife, it constitutes a path of action, just like conceiving Zhang's wife to be Wang's wife. The second says: it does not constitute a path of action, because the conception of the object is erroneous.
