今依大乘，景述兩解。一云，即一念中義說根道，能生是根暢思名道根究竟，義同薩婆多。二云：用後方便究竟，於前令究竟義似成實。測同初說，備同後說。

Now, relying on the Mahāyāna, Jing relates two explanations. One says that within a single thought-moment the root and the path are conceptually distinguished: that which can generate is the root, and that which gives expression to volition is called the path; the root culminates, its meaning being identical to the Sarvāstivāda. The second says: using the subsequent preliminary stage to culminate, it brings the prior to culmination, its meaning resembling the *Tattvasiddhi*. Ce agrees with the first explanation, while Bei agrees with the second explanation.
