The Tripiṭaka Master judged, saying: The latter explanation is superior. Regarding the statement, 'Bodhisattvas who have already realized and entered the stage of pure intention have all unwholesome karma severed once and for all,' etc.: upon the first stage, all bad karma severed by seeing is severed; as for the higher and middling bad karma severed by cultivation, it is permanently suppressed and does not arise at the path of seeing; from the seventh stage onward, volitional karma associated with the lowest grade of afflictions severed by cultivation is deliberately generated only for the sake of benefiting others upon knowing [the necessity]. Another explanation says: Prior to the seventh stage, they go to the bad destinies through unbonded karma to benefit sentient beings; the treatise master specifically refers to bonded karma, and hence says 'all are severed.'
