'Following one's own sphere' means being bound by dormant tendencies of one's own stage when born in one's own stage. 'Following another's sphere' is, for instance, being followed by dormant tendencies of a lower stage when born in a higher stage, or being followed by dormant tendencies of a higher stage when born in a lower stage. 'Impaired' means, for instance, suppressing dormant tendencies of the desire realm by relying on the first dhyāna. 'Unimpaired' refers to dormant tendencies of the first dhyāna's own stage, whether one is detached or not detached from desire. 'Increasing' means that when born in one's own stage, dormant tendencies of one's own stage increase because of frequent perfuming. 'Not increasing' means that when born in one's own stage, dormant tendencies of another realm do not increase because of lack of frequent perfuming. 'Incomplete' means that according to the principles of the Mahāyāna, at the moment of the uninterrupted path there are no seed-tendencies of affliction, so no noble one has complete bondage, unlike in the Hinayāna treatises. 'Conscious dormant tendencies' refers to those whose fruits of entwinement operate together with the entwinements; entwinement is that which perfumes, and its fruit, operating together with the perfuming entwinement, is called conscious. 'Unconscious' refers to those capable of producing without being accompanied by manifest entwinements. 'Much suffering' and so forth means that the desire realm possesses all three sufferings, the form realm has two sufferings, and the formless realm has only one; those from the eighth stage and above are called sovereign bodhisattvas.
