Below, in explaining the universal or restricted arising of higher and lower phenomena, Jing says: Regarding 'the phenomena of the higher and lower stages born are not present before one': except when ending life in a higher stage and about to be born below, when one generates attachment to the lower stage. Furthermore, being born in a higher stage, one produces the lower four consciousnesses—seeing, hearing, touching, and so forth. One who is not yet free from desire produces attachment toward a higher stage, which may be defiled or undefiled; the defiled is greed, while the undefiled is attachment already possessed in the desire realm, which does not take higher realms as object. This agrees with what the Hīnayāna treatises say. However, slight and subtle attachment can also take higher realms as object.
