Second, distinguishing the purification of the concentrated stage. Again there are two rounds. The first says, "relying on the cultivation of such mental attention up to the fundamental superior concentration": this clarifies what is accomplished by mental attention. Furthermore, "able to realize joyful, free-from-joy, pure peace and joy": this refers to attaining the lower three concentrations. Another explanation: The first two concentrations are called "having joy," the third concentration is called "free from joy," and the fourth concentration is called "peace, joy, and purity." Another explanation: The third concentration is called "free from joy, peace, and joy," and from the fourth concentration upward to neither-perception-nor-non-perception is called "purification." Another explanation: From the fourth concentration upward to neither-perception-nor-non-perception is called "peace, joy, and purity." Another explanation: From the third concentration upward is collectively called "free from joy."
