In the fourth [section], distinguishing the varieties of abiding, ([the Supplement] says:) as for 'namely, the varieties of the abiding of the two liberations': 'One should know that this refers to the six serenities, etc.'—first, being free from sinking and agitation is one serenity. As for 'Because of the subsidence and equipoise of pure consciousness', 'subsidence' is an analogy for meditative absorption, not an analogy for the absence of subsidence and equipoise. As for 'not because of the equipoise of its basis', because one's mind mostly wavers when relying on agitation, now being free from that agitation is called 'the equipoise of the basis'. Second, it clarifies that entering absorption without preparatory effort is called the serenity of entry. Third, it clarifies that emerging from absorption without preparatory effort is called the serenity of emergence. Fourth, when within the cessation absorption the three formations do not operate, this is called serenity. Fifth, as for 'serenity regarding the mind that emerges into remoteness, etc.', the cessation absorption is called remoteness, and the emerging mind is constantly serene. Sixth, as for 'because of serenity regarding the mind that emerges into proximity, etc.', after one emerges from the cessation absorption and enters those three minds, those three minds are called 'proximate' because they are proximate to the cessation absorption: 1. the supreme absorption of the form realm; 2. the supreme absorption of the formless realm; 3. the supramundane untainted absorption. When the mind emerges from the cessation absorption and enters an absorption of the form realm, this is said according to the succession of first entering an absorption of the formless realm and later entering a mind in an absorption of the form realm; or, it may be said according to the Buddhas and bodhisattvas who, upon emerging from the cessation absorption, immediately enter an absorption of the form realm. If, upon emerging from the cessation absorption, one enters an absorption of the formless realm, one proximately enters the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, then enters the sphere of nothingness, and distantly enters the sphere of consciousness or the sphere of space. If, upon emerging from the cessation absorption, one enters an untainted mind, one enters any one of the lower three formless absorptions at will. Emerging from the cessation absorption, one first gives rise to an absorption of the formless realm and next gives rise to an absorption of the form realm; or, emerging from the cessation absorption, one enters an untainted absorption. Since such three minds arise only by emerging from the cessation absorption, this is called 'serenity regarding the mind that emerges into proximity'.
