Ji says: It means that three persons each cultivate one aspect of practice; because persons and phenomena are explained together, there are six, the meaning being the same as the previous explanation. Another explanation is: Three persons practice six practices, and the six practices constitute deliverance. That is, the first person cultivates four practices, and the other two each cultivate one practice: cultivating benevolence toward hostile actions, generating compassion toward evil actions, generating sympathetic joy toward pure actions, and generating equanimity toward actions of gratitude—these are all called concentration focused on sentient beings, which amounts to four, but are collectively combined into one because their focus on sentient beings is identical. Second, the one with concentration focused on phenomena is a person with the roots of goodness conducive to liberation. Third, the one who cultivates the contemplation of the truths is a person with the roots of goodness conducive to penetration; because they take phenomena as conducive to the realm of nirvāṇa, there are six. Although three persons are cited, because the phenomena comprise three practices, the focal objects are six; because they are distinct, there are six conducive phenomena.
