Regarding mental volition as food: the Cheng weishi lun states: it refers to tainted volition operating together with desire. It also states: although this volition is associated with all consciousnesses, that belonging to the mental consciousness has the pre-eminent sense of food. This intention precisely reveals that tainted volition associated with the eight consciousnesses across the three realms, which hopes for desirable objects and sustains and benefits the body, is entirely the entity of mental volition as food.
