Sixteenth, explaining phenomena subsumed under name-and-form. Jing states: "Those that can be found to increase in various places" explains the meaning of "form" through [the sense of] capable of increasing, exclusively relying on form that is visible to explain the meaning of "form." "When contacted by hands, clods of earth, and so forth, it immediately undergoes change and decay" explains the meaning of "form" through [the sense of] being subject to change and decay. From "the remaining four aggregates..." up to "the four aggregates are spoken of as name": because various names are applied to phenomena, and the four aggregates direct themselves toward phenomena based on names, they are named after that on which they rely—verbal designations; hence the four aggregates are subsumed under "name." In the text above there are two explanations: first, just as one seeks and grasps phenomena by relying on verbal designations, one grasps phenomena by relying on those four aggregates, and therefore the four aggregates are named "name" by metaphor; second, the four aggregates rely on verbal designations to grasp phenomena, and from the verbal designations on which they rely, the four aggregates are called "name." In the present context, it corresponds to the latter explanation. Tai states: By the power of the designation through various names, phrases, and sentences, and because various names, phrases, and sentences serve as the support for the four aggregates, therefore, excluding the five consciousnesses, the mental consciousness mostly circulates and directs itself toward its respective cognitive objects; it mostly relies on the power of names, phrases, and sentences before it can cognize objects. Therefore, the four aggregates are said to be "name," receiving their title from that on which they rely. Although the four aggregates of the five consciousnesses do not cognize objects by relying on names, speaking from the perspective of the predominant mental consciousness, all are spoken of as "name."
