In the ninth [section], explaining acceptance: regarding 'acceptance as one's own', it cannot be transferred or maintained [for another]; one forms the notion of belonging to oneself, knowing it to be an acquisition. 'Acceptance by receiving' can be transferred and held, receiving and taking it either with the hand or with a bowl, etc. 'Acceptance by entrustment' is acceptance through pure donation (kalpikāra). 'Acceptance by renunciation and giving' means accepting items given as alms by others; or it is said: accepting Dharma offerings, where practicing the Dharma of giving is called acceptance by renunciation and giving; alternatively, one may oneself receive and obtain the merit of giving, which is called acceptance by renunciation and giving. 'Acceptance on behalf of another' means accepting an invitation for food on behalf of another. 'Because of receiving in an improper place' means receiving and taking food and drink at a stupa or on a circumambulation path. 'Accepting in improper measure or in an improper manner': excess and contrary to the Dharma are termed improper measure and improper place. 'Entrusting without examining the person' means accepting and entrusting without examining whether the person before one is a thief or not a thief, and so forth. 'A mind attached to impure items' means, for example, a mind passionately clinging to alcohol, meat, etc. (1) 'Giving to a lowly and evil field'; (2) 'giving not without expectation': this is said in terms of the giver; both conditions of giving and receiving the gift are impure; alternatively, it is said that the other person lacks nothing, yet one gives with a notion of no expectation, hence both are impure. (1) 'Because they are not an old acquaintance, have not informed [one], and are not personally known': if one accepts on behalf of another, yet that person is not an old acquaintance, does not inform [one], and one does not know that person. (2) 'Because of having a defiled mind': in what is accepted and held on behalf of another, it can generate defiled thoughts in oneself.
