Tai says: The bases of the noble path differ among the various schools. According to the Sarvāstivādins, there are nine stage-bases, namely the four fundamental dhyānas, the preliminary stage, the intermediate [dhyāna], and three formless [stages], excluding the stage of neither perception nor non-perception. According to the Tattvasiddhi, there are seven concentrations as bases, namely the four fundamental dhyānas and three formless concentrations. Now, the Mahāyāna has eight bases, namely the preliminary stage to the first [dhyāna], the four fundamental dhyānas, and three formless concentrations; therefore it differs from the Abhidharma and the Tattvasiddhi. If following the one-hundredth fascicle, the Mahāyāna also has nine bases, as that text states: "Furthermore, there are nine bases capable of exhausting all taints. What are the nine? They are the preliminary concentration, the first dhyāna, the intermediate dhyāna, the other three dhyānas, and the three formless [attainments] excluding the peak of existence." However, in the present text, eight bases are the real truth, whereas the one-hundredth fascicle conforms to the method of provisional adaptation, so they do not contradict each other. Furthermore, according to the Sarvāstivādins, the desire realm possesses only [wisdom arisen from] hearing and reflection, the form realm possesses hearing and cultivation, and the formless realm possesses exclusively cultivation; the Tattvasiddhi holds that hearing and reflection extend through two realms, and wisdom arisen from cultivation extends through all three realms. Now, the Mahāyāna agrees with the Sarvāstivādins: the direct realization through reflection takes superior wisdom arisen from reflection as its essence, so it is exclusively in the desire realm. Therefore it is said that it is obtainable based on a non-basis. With respect to the other five direct realizations compared to reflection, it is generally said that they are based on all bases, not that each and every direct realization must be based on all eight bases.
