Twentieth, explaining the five kinds of persons established based on the superior. In accord with worldly conventions, these five are all spoken of as having 'superior conduct'; because the five persons are established based on this superior conduct, the text says: 'based on the superior, establishing the five kinds,' and so on. If based on principle, however, only the second and fifth are noble beings and obtain the name 'superior'; the first is an ordinary worldling, while the third and fourth are non-Buddhists whose practice is inverted and cannot be called superior. The first person has three aspects: aspiring for the joy and pleasure born of desire, and delighting in the desire realm—this is one explanation. Aspiring for that with investigation and with reflection, and aspiring for that without investigation and with only reflection, are combined as the second; aspiring for that without investigation and without reflection is the third. 'A person aspiring to cut off the afflictive hindrances, who has already attained a pleasant dwelling in the present life that was previously unattained': having already attained the four fundamental dhyānas that were previously unattained; it is only upon removing afflictive hindrances that one begins to attain them, which is called 'a pleasant dwelling in the present life'.
