'Having already attained the meditative attainments with conceptual thought in all their varieties that were previously unattained': the meditative attainments of the lower three formless realms are also attained only after having severed the afflictive hindrances of the lower realms. 'Regarding the support': this refers to the four dhyānas, which are the support for all virtues. 'Regarding observation': this refers to the extensive observation of the four formless attainments, such as the contemplation of boundless space. 'A person aspiring to cut off the hindrances to meditative stabilization, who has already attained all the spheres of mastery that were previously unattained, and has already attained all the spheres of totality that were previously unattained': this refers to the distraction that obstructs meditative stabilization, which is called 'the hindrance to meditative stabilization' and is also called 'the hindrance to knowables'. 'A practitioner who has arrived at the ultimate philosophical view, namely, who has already attained the sphere of neither-conceptualization-nor-non-conceptualization that was previously unattained': this refers to clinging to sorrowful conceptions as ultimate nirvāṇa. 'Arrived at the traces of ultimate view, namely, having definitively realized and experienced the complete and perpetual cessation of the six bases of sensory contact without remainder': since the six internal bases are cited as having been perpetually severed, the six external bases have also already been perpetually severed.
