In the second sūtra, Jing says: First, naturelessness of character: that is, the intrinsic nature of all conventional speech, which is the parikalpita dharma following speech, originally without character. Second, naturelessness of arising: that is, all conditioned formations arise from multiple conditions and exist through the power of conditions, not spontaneously; which is the paratantra nature relying on multiple conditions to arise, and having no spontaneous arising is named naturelessness of arising. Third, ultimate naturelessness: that is, dharmas far removed from the character of the ultimate meaning, which are said to be without intrinsic nature by virtue of the ultimate truth. This ultimate naturelessness is also paratantra; because it is an impermanent dharma-essence due to causes and conditions, it is not that true ultimate dharma; hence it is called 'dharmas removed from the character of the ultimate meaning.' Because this paratantra is devoid of that ultimate truth, paratantra is said to be called ultimate naturelessness. According to the Saṃdhinirmocanasūtra below, ultimate naturelessness has two meanings: 1. Explaining ultimate naturelessness in terms of paratantra, as just discussed; 2. Clarifying ultimate naturelessness in terms of the pariniṣpanna essence. The latter has two meanings: 1. The pariniṣpanna nature is by nature separated from nominal convention, devoid of that grasped character of the ultimate meaning, and is called ultimate naturelessness; 2. This pariniṣpanna essence is the ultimate truth. Such an ultimate truth is revealed through the two gateways of characterlessness and non-arising, and is therefore called ultimate naturelessness. Now this text distinguishes ultimate naturelessness solely in terms of paratantra.
