The fifty-seventh [topic] explains that gnosis has two virtues. First is the virtue of right practice, which has three clauses: first, swiftness, meaning that the mind and mental factors associated with the various gnoses turn rapidly; second, certainty, meaning that the various gnoses sever doubt; third, subtlety, meaning that the various gnoses are able to enter into subtle principle. Second is the virtue of intrinsic nature, which has seven clauses: first, being of the stage of concentration, which excludes the wisdom arisen from hearing; second, being irreversible, which excludes the former five faculties and lineages; third, being supramundane, which excludes the mundane wisdom arisen from cultivation; fourth, being well cultivated, which excludes beginners in the vehicles; fifth, being unobstructed in its own sphere of activity, which shows lack of impediment with respect to cognitive objects; sixth, excelling all other roots of goodness of its own class, meaning it excels all other roots of goodness belonging to its own vehicle; seventh, excelling all roots of goodness of other classes, meaning it excels the roots of goodness of non-Buddhists. Another explanation is: taintless gnosis excels tainted gnosis, which is called excelling its own class, and it further excels all other tainted dharmas apart from tainted gnosis, which is called excelling other classes.
