In the next phrase, "not renounced": not giving rise to the thought of giving is called not renounced; not discarded can be understood. "Greedy and gluttonous": coveting wealth is greed (tāo), and coveting food is gluttony (tiè). At the time of disputation, when another's reasoning prevails and one does not exonerate oneself, it is called taking without clearing; although contending and thereby obtaining that wealth, when the wealth is not one's own property and one contends to take it, it is called taking impurely.
