The third is the gate of seeking skill in calm abiding and special insight. Jing says: Reason dictates that based on these four cognitive spheres one seeks calm abiding and also seeks special insight; the author of the text transposes the phrasing, hence stating 'seeking calm abiding, one is able to be skilled in special insight'. The statement 'establishing the twelve divisions of scriptures for the bodhisattvas, and their hearing and properly accepting them, etc.' is the wisdom arisen from hearing. 'Right therein, in solitary and quiet places, contemplating the teaching as considered, etc.' is the wisdom arisen from reflection. When these wisdoms of hearing and reflection take that teaching as their cognitive object during the preliminary practices of cultivation, they take the image-aspect (nimittabhāga) transformed by their own minds as their cognitive object. As for the statement 'furthermore, directly toward this reflective mind, the internal mental continuum, taking it as the cognitive object with the seeing-aspect (darśanabhāga); because of frequently abiding in such correct practice, bodily pliancy and mental pliancy arise—this is called śamatha', this means that because the preliminary practice is completed, one attains that concentration.
