Regarding the statement, "If the differing characteristics of the marks, natures, activities, dharmas, causes, and effects of all dharmas […] this is called the characteristic of being obtainable in all things of a different class": this explains the fifth, occurring in a part of both classes. For example, when a Grammarian establishes: "Sound is eternal, because of being intangible." The eternalist thesis has empty space and subtle atoms as its sapakṣa; this reason of intangibility exists in empty space but is absent in subtle atoms; it has pots, pleasure, and the like as its vipakṣa, and this reason of intangibility exists in pleasure and the like but is absent in pots and the like. Therefore it says, "because in accordance with such a part it progressively shares the marks of the sapakṣa and vipakṣa, this is called the characteristic of being obtainable in other things of the same and different classes."
