Regarding the statement, "If there are distinct, mutually different characteristics definitively, this is called the characteristic of being obtainable in all things of a different class": this explains the fourth, being obtainable in all things of a different class, which is the uncommon inconclusive (asādhāraṇa-anaikāntika), as in saying "Sound is eternal, because of being audible," and so forth. "O virtuous son! […] this is called the non-pariniṣpanna characteristic": this explains the first, the characteristic of being obtainable in other things of the same class, which is occurring in a part of the sapakṣa and pervading the vipakṣa. Regarding the statement, "Moreover, in the characteristic of being obtainable in other things of a different class […] is also called non-pariniṣpanna": this explains the second, the characteristic of being obtainable in other things of a different class and the characteristic of all things of the same class in an analogy; that is, it explains occurring in a part of the vipakṣa and pervading the sapakṣa. The statement, "Because it is not pariniṣpanna, it is not well-examined, purified reasoning. Because it is unpurified, one should not cultivate it": this explains the sixth, the non-pariniṣpanna characteristic; when the members and reasons are incomplete, the reasoning is unpurified and should not be cultivated. The statement, "If it is a characteristic drawn from analogies of a different class […] their intrinsic nature is entirely unpurified": this explains the seventh, the characteristic of not being well-purified spoken teachings, like establishing "Sound is eternal, because of being produced," taking empty space as the sapakṣa and lightning and pots as the vipakṣa; this reason exists only in the vipakṣa, hence it is called "a characteristic drawn from analogies of a different class."
