Master Tai says: In the first phrase, establishing the reason is unproven (asiddha). For example, establishing the thesis, "The aggregate as a whole is impermanent," with the reason, "Because of being cognised by the mental consciousness." However, the unconditioned is equally a dharma cognised by the mind, yet is not impermanent. In the second phrase, for example, establishing the thesis, "Sound is impermanent," with the reason, "Because of being heard by the ear consciousness." However, different classes of dharmas such as form and scent are not heard by the ear consciousness; yet they are impermanent, so establishing the reason is unproven. If one establishes the thesis, "Sound is eternal," with the reason, "Because of being born from causes"—yet there are no different classes of dharmas not born from causes that are impermanent, so the different class cannot be obtained.
