緣起者至宣說法要者，如彼經初說云有一黑鹿子來至我所等，如是經文名緣起經。又依別解脫因起之道、毘奈耶攝所有言說者，如律文中，時跋陀摩子犯於某罪，佛因此事等言，亦是緣起經。

Nidāna [origins] up to "preaching the essentials of the Dharma": as when at the beginning of that sūtra it says that a certain son of a black deer came to my dwelling, and so forth—such sūtra texts are called nidāna sūtras. Moreover, "based on the path of conditions giving rise to pratimokṣa, all verbal expressions subsumed under vinaya": as in the vinaya texts, "At that time the son of Paduma committed a certain offense, and on account of this event the Buddha..."—such words are also nidāna sūtras.
