Third, explaining the cultivation of samādhi: Master Jing explains, saying: 'Aspiration and so forth' refers to aspiration, effort, mind, and discernment co-occurring with indolence, hence it says 'aspiration and so forth.' Regarding 'the objective domain belonging to the category of vipaśyanā,' namely, 'the notion of before and after': the four wisdoms of hearing, reflection, cultivation, and realization being cultivated and entering into one another before and after is called the 'notion of before and after.' 'The objective domain belonging to the category of śamatha' refers to 'the notion of above and below,' etc.: the four dhyānas and four formless absorptions, entering from below to above, are called the 'notion of above and below.' 'The objective domain belonging to both categories' up to 'cultivating with minds co-occurring with various light-forms': when a beginner practices contemplation, they produce signs of light; at that time, there are image-aspects of light-forms appearing before the mind as the objective domain.
