Second is to explain the fruits. As for the 'six fetters': first, the lower realms; second, the higher realms; third, what is abandoned through seeing; fourth, what is abandoned through cultivation; fifth, arising, which means defilements arising in the intermediate state; sixth, rebirth, which means defilements in the rebirth-aggregate. Thus, they are individually spoken of as six fetters. As for 'in that order, establishing the two, four, and seven kinds of benefits of the fruits': by abandoning the five [fetters binding to] the lower realms, the fruit of a non-returner is established; by abandoning the five [fetters binding to] the higher realms, [the fruit of] an arhat is established; therefore it is said that two fruits are established. If one completely abandons the defilements of seeing, the first fruit is established; if one completely abandons the defilements of cultivation, the latter three fruits are established; therefore it says that four fruits are established. In the intermediate state, three types of anāgāmins are established, namely the lower, middle, and upper; in the rebirth-aggregate, four types of anāgāmins are established, namely [attaining parinirvāṇa upon] rebirth, with effort, without effort, and flowing upstream; therefore it says that seven are established.
