Regarding 'Fifteenth, among the mutual subsumption of the eight gateways of dependent origination, three gateways are revealed by them': this is the general statement. Below, they are distinguished individually: namely, two in part—the gateway of the arising of internal consciousness and the gateway of that which is made by one's own karma; and one revealed in full—the gateway of the turning of the sentient world. (Jing says:) The gateway of the arising of internal consciousness only considers the six sense faculties generating the six consciousnesses; consciousness is subsumed under the consciousness branch and does not exhaust the branches of dependent origination. The gateway of that which is made by one's own karma only considers generating the distinctions among the five destinies from the karma of volitional formations and existence, and does not subsume the three afflictions or the seeds of the five branches; therefore it does not subsume the existence branches in full. Why are the remaining five gateways not revealed by the twelve? It is because the primary doctrine of the twelve branches of conditions clarifies the causes and fruits of the internal bodies of sentient beings. The gateway of the ripening of external crops and the gateway of the formation and destruction of the receptacle world are not causes and fruits of internal bodies, and are not the twelve branches. The gateway of sustenance by food only nourishes sentient beings with external food and is also not an efficient condition that can generate the internal body. The gateway of mighty power clarifies that based on a single branch, the five superknowledges are shared across the nine grounds and bring forth the meaning of the superknowledge of the destruction of outflows, and therefore are not the twelve conditions. The gateway of purification is the taintless factors of the path arising dependent on conditions, and is also not the conditions of the twelve branches. (Ji says:) In the gateway of the arising of internal consciousness, consciousness arises based on sense faculties; it is the gateway taking the various consciousnesses as substance. In the gateway of that which is made by one's own karma, karma brings about vipāka, which has general and particular aspects; because it is solely the general retribution, it says 'in part.' Conditioned arising has three kinds: first, conditioned arising of intrinsic nature, meaning the eighth ripening consciousness conditioned to arise as its intrinsic nature; second, conditioned arising of experiential use, meaning the six groups of consciousness experiencing objects; third, conditioned arising of the paths of the agreeable and disagreeable, which is precisely the twelve branches. Its gateway of the arising of consciousness, relying on sense faculties and taking objects as condition, directly resembles the conditioned arising of experiential use; the gateway of that which is made by one's own karma directly resembles the conditioned arising of intrinsic nature; the one in full is precisely the path of the agreeable and disagreeable. Although the wholesome factors conducive to liberation and so forth are called the gateway of purification, they serve as conditions that counteract and harm the round of transmigration; and because they do not conform to or benefit it, they are also not subsumed. Counteracting the meaning of the round of transmigration is as stated in the Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra.
