Regarding 'Sixteenth, distinguishing faults and benefits: the five faults,' (Jing says:) First, giving rise to the view of self; second, giving rise to views concerning the past limit; third, giving rise to views concerning the future limit; fourth, giving rise to views concerning both past and future limits; fifth, with regard to those views having vehement, firm grasping, having grasping and having fear, not entering parinirvāṇa. (Ji says:) First, taking the view of self as root, because of this the three limits' views of eternalism, annihilationism, together with wrong views, are produced as three, in accordance with what is applicable among the sixty-two views. Taking the three limits as condition, one gives rise to views of eternalism and annihilationism and wrong views; therefore the fifth is precisely giving rise to vehement, firm grasping toward these views, grasping them as superior, fearing nirvāṇa and not attaining it in the present—namely the grasping of views or the five theories of present nirvāṇa within wrong view. These five faults refer to giving rise to four views, excluding only the grasping of precepts and vows.
