Regarding the meaning of non-self: it is free from the entity and marks of a self; emptiness is freedom from the activity of a self—such is the difference between the two. The lower fascicle of the Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra says: In the truth of suffering, freedom from the nature of a real self is called emptiness; in the truth of suffering, the nature of not having the marks of a self is called non-self. The sixth fascicle of the Abhidharma[-samuccaya-vyākhyā] says the same as the sūtra; their points of reference differ, so they are not contradictory. Furthermore, this meaning of emptiness is freedom from agent and experiencer, which are the entity of a self; the meaning of non-self is that the entity of dharmas is not the mark of a self, which also accords with that. The statement here that there is no mark of a self means that 'no' expresses 'not.'
