Fascicle 28 also states: "The aids to liberation are called the beginner; the aids to penetration are called those who have already practiced; and after the direct realization of the truths, one is called one who has transcended mental application." This shows that apprehending characteristics is in the aids to liberation, the next five mental applications are in the aids to penetration, and the seventh mental application is after the direct realization of the truths. If one takes this explanation, it contradicts the text below on subsumption with the three [classes of practitioners], including those in training, among the forty mental applications, where all seven mental applications extend to those in training, and the first and seventh also extend to those beyond training. From this it is known that the distinct assignment of the three kinds of yogic practitioners to stages has a different meaning from the subsumption under the seven mental applications; the two gates are inherently distinct. One must not, because the three kinds of yogic practitioners are subsumed under the seven, then take it that the three stages of the seven mental applications are also like that; one should not make wild discriminations here. However, the three kinds of yogic practitioners in fascicle 28 are generally assigned to the seven mental applications, not assigned to the seven mental applications on the basis of the three stages. For instance, in the stage of neither in training nor beyond training, one possesses the seven mental applications; in the path of accumulation of the stage in training, there are those who possess the seven mental applications, because they have previously advanced to detach from defilement on the basis of the worldly path; there are also those in the path of accumulation who do not cultivate the seven mental applications because they do not cultivate concentration; it is only in the path of preparatory application that one fully possesses the seven mental applications to advance and detach from the nine grades of defilement of the desire realm; after attaining direct realization, one also gives rise to the seven mental applications to advance and detach from the defilements of the higher stages.
