四十作意為十一類：一、初二教義；二、四念住；三、二假實；四、凡聖三類；五、斷初中後三類；六、四類所緣；七、六類修證離染；八、四道；九、四位修；十、四類慧定離障而得自在；十一、四類三乘因果所有作意。初四類為一通因，後七類唯在有學無學為別因。

The forty mental applications constitute eleven categories: 1. the initial two, teaching and meaning; 2. the four stations of mindfulness; 3. the two, provisional and real; 4. the three categories of ordinary beings and noble ones; 5. the three categories of severing the initial, middle, and final; 6. the four categories of focal objects; 7. the six categories of cultivating and realizing detachment from defilement; 8. the four paths; 9. cultivation in the four stages; 10. the four categories of wisdom and concentration detaching from hindrances and attaining mastery; 11. the four categories of all mental applications belonging to cause and fruit across the three vehicles. The first four categories form a single general cause; the latter seven categories exist exclusively in those in training and those beyond training as specific causes.
