觀察作意，唯攝勝解者，是中三品勝進道故，初假解修不說通實，為後加行理亦通真。餘三作意，唯攝真實者，為無間道多觀真故。

As for "the mental application of examination includes only resolute engagement": this is because it is the superior path of progress among the three grades. Being an initial cultivation of provisional resolution, it is not spoken of as applying to the real; yet as a preliminary application for what follows, it logically also applies to the real. As for "the remaining three mental applications include only the real": this is because, being uninterrupted paths, they mostly contemplate the real.
