As for the mark of the cognitive object: this refers to the substance and marks of the conceptual discrimination of the things to be known; the substance of conceptual discrimination is the cognitive mind and mental factors, and the marks of conceptual discrimination are the objective division of the cognitive object, for the absorbed mind takes these subjective and objective divisions as its cognitive objects. As for the mark of causes and conditions: this refers to the provisions for absorption, namely the causes of absence of regret, joy, bliss, and so forth. As for the four such as not guarding the sense-doors: this refers to, as stated before, 1. not guarding the sense-doors; 2. not knowing moderation in eating; 3. not being constantly wakeful in the first and last watches of the night to diligently cultivate contemplative practice; and 4. not dwelling in correct awareness; these are extensively explained below in the Śrāvakabhūmi. Sinking, restlessness, and distraction are according to their names; as for attachment, its intrinsic nature is ignorance, or else its nature is craving, or the nature of all afflictions such as views and doubt.
