基復解云:或順定名修方便,不修方便,非必出世。又釋:不修方便者,謂無學人已得出離更不修方便故但觀有貪等三對心,若修方便者,謂有學人觀略下等七對心順無學出離故。

Ji further explains: Or else, what accords with meditative concentration is called "cultivating means," and not according with it is "not cultivating means," not necessarily referring to the supramundane. Another explanation says: "one who does not cultivate means" refers to the trainee (aśaikṣa), who has already attained renunciation and no longer cultivates means, and therefore only contemplates the three pairs of minds such as with lust; whereas "one who cultivates means" refers to the learner (śaikṣa), who contemplates the seven pairs of minds such as constricted and low, because this accords with the renunciation of the trainee.
