為顯修習未曾得定等者，此釋難言：諸四近分及根本定，皆初修定，何故經中唯說初靜慮前方便道。故今釋言：為顯修習未曾得定，初現法樂住未曾得故，若修上之三地曾得種類故略不說。

Regarding "in order to reveal the cultivation of concentration not yet attained, and so forth": this explains an objection that says: "The four threshold and fundamental concentrations are all initial cultivations of concentration; why does the sūtra speak only of the preparatory path prior to the first dhyāna?" Hence it is now explained: "In order to reveal the cultivation of concentration not yet attained: because the initial dwelling in happiness in the present life has never been attained before. As for cultivating the upper three stages, because they are of a kind previously attained, they are omitted and not stated."
