In the third simile, 'water' is a simile for the concentration free from joy and without investigation or reflection, down to 'like a lotus calyx submerged in water': this phrasing intends to reveal that the second concentration is like water; agitated and welling up due to joy, it is like a flower emerging from water, the flower being a simile for joy. Now the third concentration is free from joy and without investigation or reflection, which is also like water; its bliss is like a lotus calyx whose bud has not yet split open, still remaining in the water, named 'flower calyx'—because it accords with concentration and does not surge or well up, it is like being in water.
