In the fourth simile there are five phrases: 'Transcending afflictive calamities' refers to the eight calamities, namely investigation, reflection, the four feelings, and the two breaths; this reveals freedom from the faults of the lower stages. 'Bright white' reveals freedom from the faults of its own stage. Next, using the householder's four activities as similes for the four functions of concentration, they are matched accordingly. As for 'using eightfold warp and ninefold warp as a simile': in the Western regions, eight or nine strands are woven into a single warp thread; when weaving fine cotton cloth, the cloth is tight and solid, just as here when making ramie cloth, fourfold or fivefold ramie can only then be tight and solid. 'Pure and bright white' is like clothing that is not thin, enduring heat, cold, and various other sufferings. 'Pervasive' is like having no exposed spot, unable to be invaded by any distraction.
