景云:以欲界根對自界塵,同在一界故言相似,色界根對色界境亦爾。言已生者,據根及境有用時說。言已等生者與識同起。若生者中有。若起者生有,亦可若生者時生,若起時依前已生等明其根境相似義,故言相似。
Jing says: When a sense faculty of the desire realm confronts dust of its own realm, they are in the same realm, and therefore it is called "similarity"; the same applies when a faculty of the form realm confronts an object of the form realm. The phrase "already arisen" is stated in terms of the time when the faculty and object are operative. The phrase "already equally arisen" means arising together with consciousness. "Whether about to arise" refers to the intermediate existence (antarābhava). "Whether occurring" refers to the birth existence (upapattibhava). Alternatively, "whether about to arise" refers to temporal arising, and when it occurs, it clarifies the meaning of similarity between faculty and object based on what has already arisen before; hence it says "similarity."
