Ninth: in the explanation of the Sūtra on the Five Marks Reflected upon by a Bhikṣu Practicing Purification of Mind, regarding the phrase 'evil and unwholesome thoughts of sensual desire and so forth': the seven kinds of investigation and reflection—unwholesome thoughts of sensual desire, ill-will, harm, relatives, country, immortality, and former pleasures—all constitute the substance of the obstacles. Regarding 'there are briefly three kinds of persons and so forth': this generally marks the three grades of discursive thought, which differentiate into five, and are explained individually below. The first, the practitioner of soft discursive thought, brings about the cessation of the seven kinds of thought by reflecting on the marks of the truths such as cause and effect. Based on middling discursive thought, there are two kinds: 1. seeing the faults of discursive thought; 2. bringing about the cessation of the seven thoughts through unmindful reflection. Based on superior discursive thought, there are also two kinds: 1. not bringing about the cessation of all at once at the beginning, but necessarily subduing them gradually by skillful means; 2. if still unable to subdue them, then giving rise to aversion and dread, bringing about the cessation of the seven thoughts through extensive reflection.
