三、別釋五相中有二：初、總標三品尋思差別成五；二、別釋五。第一、耎品尋思行者，思惟因果等諦相故，令七種尋滅。依中品尋思，分成二種：一、見尋思過患，二、不念思惟，令七尋滅。依上品尋思，亦分成二：一、非初即令一切不行，要當方便，漸尚折伏；二、若猶未能伏，便生厭悕，多思惟故，令七尋滅。

Third, in separately explaining the five characteristics, there are two parts: first, generally marking how the distinctions among the three grades of discursive thought constitute the five; second, separately explaining the five. First, for a practitioner with lower-grade discursive thought, through contemplating the characteristics of the truths such as cause and effect, the seven kinds of discursive thought are extinguished. Based on medium-grade discursive thought, it is divided into two kinds: 1. seeing the faults of discursive thought; 2. not bringing it to mind, thereby causing the seven thoughts to be extinguished. Based on higher-grade discursive thought, it is also divided into two: 1. not causing all to cease from the very beginning, but necessarily using skillful means to gradually subdue them; 2. if still unable to subdue them, then giving rise to revulsion and aspiration, and by contemplating extensively, causing the seven thoughts to be extinguished.
