In the commentary on the single verse of the fourteenth section, the text is divided into four: first, explaining the first line; second, from 'If there is one who is further able, regarding the well-spoken Dharma' onwards explains the second line; third, from 'Having thus well cultivated right means' onwards explains the third line; fourth, from 'Furthermore, because of cultivating the path attained as before' onwards explains the fourth line. Regarding 'upholding the seven bases of meritorious actions': there are three explanations here: One says that they are the seven noble riches, among which giving is paramount, which is why it is specifically mentioned. The second says that among the eight types of giving explained, they reverse the faults of the first seven. The third says: As stated in the Abhidharmakośa and other texts, according to the sūtra: 'If there are faithful good sons or good daughters who accomplish the seven bases of meritorious actions with support, whether walking, standing, sleeping, or waking, constantly and continuously their meritorious karma gradually increases and their meritorious karma continuously arises; the same applies to those without support, excluding unmanifest karma.' The explanation says: The seven meritorious actions with support are: 1. giving to travelers; 2. giving to wayfarers; 3. giving to the sick; 4. giving to caretakers of the sick; 5. giving parks and groves; 6. constant almsgiving; 7. giving according to the season. The 'seven kinds' mentioned here are precisely those.
