In explaining the first verse: First, it explains the first line: the three kinds of world are the general world; the two kinds of world are established separately within the three; ignorance veiling the world refers to home-departed non-Buddhists. From "teachers of good doctrines, because of possessing illumination" downward, it explains the second line. From "if there are householders, disparate white-robed laymen" downward, it explains the third line. The three conceptual proliferations are: 1. the three bases of speech; 2. the four modes of discourse; 3. investigation and reflection. The three bases of speech refer to phenomena of the three periods of time; the four modes of discourse refer to what is seen, heard, sensed, and known. The bases of speech are called conceptual proliferations only because they are conceptualized; thoughts that conflict with or accord with things are called 'staining,' because they can conceptualize, and because they can cause increase and can follow along. Here, from "teachers of bad doctrines, veiled by ignorance" downward, it explains the fourth line. The first three lines are the cause; this one line is the fruit. The first is ignorance; the next is heedlessness; the last is conceptualizing thoughts that conflict with or accord with things.
