In the summary of meanings, it first concludes the preceding and asks about the following; next, it explains directly; afterwards, it concludes it. In the explanation, it first opens three gates, and afterwards examines and explains them individually. There are three examinations and explanations: First, explaining the activities of action, which are the first five among the nine. Second, explaining the activities of dwelling, which also have five: 1. bodily karma, which is the sixth—walking, standing, and sitting; 2. verbal karma, which is the eighth—speaking; 3. mental karma, which is the sixth—lying down, the eighth—remaining silent, and the ninth—dispelling sleepiness; 4. daytime activities; 5. nighttime activities. These two are the bodily and verbal karmas of daytime and nighttime activities in the seventh—practicing waking. Where it says here that lying down or remaining silent are called mental karmas during dwelling: here, lying down should be within bodily karma, but because when lying down one contemplates the perception of light, it is called mental karma; it is not that lying down itself is mind. Furthermore, regarding 'if lying down', this statement indicates nighttime activity during dwelling; moreover, taking lying down from the sixth—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—it is also the fifth, nighttime activity, among the five activities of dwelling. This lying down was previously subsumed under mental karma, and is now subsumed under nighttime activity: a single phenomenon with two functions.
