This is then remedied below with the notion of light. There are four kinds of light: 1. the light of Dharma, which is the wisdom arisen from hearing, so named because it thoroughly understands the teachings; 2. the light of meaning, which is the wisdom arisen from reflection, so named because it definitively resolves the meaning; the latter two can be understood. Master Jing determined: 'Among these eleven, if the mind is dark and confused regarding the teachings, it is remedied by the Dharma light of hearing-wisdom; if the mind is dark and gives rise to obstacles regarding the meaning expressed by the teachings, it is remedied by the meaning light of reflection-wisdom; if it hinders the initiating of practice, it is remedied by the light of calm and insight. It is also permissible that here one only takes the Dharma and meaning lights of hearing and reflection to remedy those faults of contemplating phenomena, and does not take the light of calm and insight as a remedy, because this calm and insight is precisely the essence of the training.'
