初中謂由依次前四神足定進修心學慧學瑜伽，由進修習此瑜伽故於佛弟子深生淨信，此信有能生出世間法及能起後乃至慧根為其增上等。此中信有二增上：一、能生出世間法而為增上；二、次第能生後法為增上，故名根。前四具二義，故精進等前亦作法，其慧但有一義，唯於能起出世間法而為增上，無能展轉而生後義。

In the first part, it says that by sequentially advancing the cultivation of the yoga of training in the mind and training in wisdom based on the preceding four meditative absorptions of psychic power bases, and because of advancing the cultivation of this yoga, one generates deep and pure faith in the Buddha's disciples. This faith is capable of generating supramundane phenomena and acts as the predominance to give rise to the subsequent [faculties] up to the faculty of wisdom. Herein, faith has two kinds of predominance: first, acting as predominance to generate supramundane phenomena; second, acting as predominance to sequentially generate subsequent phenomena; hence it is called a “faculty.” The first four possess both meanings; therefore, striving and so forth are formulated as preceding [the others]. Wisdom has only one meaning: it acts as predominance solely in being capable of giving rise to supramundane phenomena, and lacks the meaning of progressively giving rise to subsequent [faculties].
