In the re-explanation, Tai said: The trainees and non-trainees of the three vehicles are collectively called the supreme path. Because at present there is no Buddha or bodhisattva in the world, the assembly of śrāvakas who uphold the teachings of the Tripiṭaka are called the teaching path; ordinary worldlings who maintain the precepts, because their life of wisdom persists, are called the living path; and ordinary worldlings who violate the precepts, violating the first root precept among the three trainings so that it is difficult to preserve their life of wisdom, are called the corrupting path. Ji said: If there is no Tathāgata or bodhisattvas [present] for the sake of bodhi... up to... the assembly of śrāvakas who uphold the Tripiṭaka are called śramaṇas of the teaching path: this is provisionally discussed in terms of śrāvakas when there are no Buddhas or bodhisattvas. If Buddhas and bodhisattvas are present, the assembly of śrāvakas are then called the supreme path, and the Buddhas and bodhisattvas are called śramaṇas of the teaching path. Now, when there are no Buddhas or bodhisattvas, śrāvakas are called the teaching path, so that the lineage of the eye of the True Dharma is not severed.
