8.170

論云「若無如來及諸菩薩為菩提故，乃至諸聲聞永持三藏者，名說道沙門」者，此且約無佛菩薩時聲聞為論。若佛菩薩在，此聲聞眾即名勝道，諸佛菩薩名說道沙門；今無佛菩薩時，聲聞名說道，令正法眼不斷種故。

The treatise says: "If there is no Tathāgata or bodhisattvas for the sake of bodhi, up to: śrāvakas who perpetually uphold the three piṭakas are called śramaṇas who expound the path." This is discussed temporarily with reference to the time when there are no Buddhas or bodhisattvas. If Buddhas and bodhisattvas are present, this assembly of śrāvakas is called [śramaṇas of] the supreme path, and the Buddhas and bodhisattvas are called śramaṇas who expound the path; now, when there are no Buddhas or bodhisattvas, the śrāvakas are called those who expound the path, because they cause the lineage of the true Dharma eye not to be broken.
